Is Poor Hygiene the Cause of Acne?

Acne is a troublesome skin problem which can threaten the self esteem of any person at any time in life. More troublesome are the scars caused by acne. Acne may leave you for good but its scars will remain with you forever. No wonder people feel the way they do when they have acne.

It is important for everyone to know the root cause of acne. Acne is mainly believed to be caused by hormonal changes in the body and bacteria on the skin. These are the two most known reasons of acne whereas dirt and poor hygiene is sometimes also held responsible for acne. In this topic we will discuss about poor hygiene and its relation with acne and try to find that whether poor hygiene is a cause of acne or not.

It is a general statement that dirt or poor hygiene has no relation with causing acne. This statement is true because poor hygiene and acne has been studied by many scientists and found no alarming situation which led to acne due to poor hygiene. Hygiene is important in all cases whether acne or not. Washing your face at least 2 times a day helps to cleanse your face. It also keeps the dirt off your face and keeps your face fresh and lively. Do not over wash your face as it can cause irritation on the skin. Always wash your face with a mild soap and rinse the soap properly to avoid dryness on skin.

Always use a mild lotion after washing your skin. It’s a common misunderstanding that you should not use moisturizers on acne skin. Whereas modern studies have shown that moisturizing your skin after washing it is important to prevent acne.
Hygiene may not be the cause of acne but it certainly helps to get rid of acne and to minimize the hazards of acne. Always take good care of your skin and make sure that you do not neglect the needs of your skin.

Helping to Prevent Acne


acnenomorePreventing outbreaks of acne in the first place is better than having to treat them. To prevent acne happening in the first instance, it is necessary to look at the triggers for outbreaks. These can be factors such as such as stress, allergy, hormonal changes, poor hygiene, poor nutrition and wearing cosmetics. Vigorous scrubbing of the skin can also make the acne worse. It’s also advisable to reduce consumption of junk food and other foods which are rich in fats. Foods such as chocolate, creamy foods, hamburgers, and french fries are rich in fats. Green vegetables, fruit, and vegetables such as leafy vegetables and carrots are also believed to be beneficial for the skin as they are rich in beta carotene plus vitamin A.

You can do quite a few things to help yourself to avoid acne outbreaks. Prevention has several aspects, from the things you can do on a daily basis to the skin treatments and products which you can buy. Skin cleansing is done to take away the excess oils which are manufactured by the skin. This is better than scrubbing the skin. Physically scrubbing the surface of the skin will have the effect of forcing the excess oil and dead skin cells back into the skin pores. There are many products that can clean the skin, but don’t buy ones which will dry out your skin. The skin has to retain moisture and if it becomes dry, the pores can produce more oil, making things worse. It’s extremely important to avoid squeezing or scraping at the acne. Picking at the acne or squeezing it can give rise to worse problems. When you do so, you are spreading bacteria across the skin of the adjacent areas and this could also lead to permanent scar formation.

Try to use products which are described as non-comedogenic (this means that they won’t block your skin’s pores) if you use suntan creams and lotions or cosmetics. Try not to use moisturizer on the areas of your skin that are affected by acne. If you must use a moisturizer, make sure that it is not acnegenic. Use of topical treatments such as medicated spray on the areas of skin where you get acne can also help. When it comes to washing, it’s good practice to wash the skin only gently using a cleansing product or a mild soap. During washing, be sure to use warm water (not hot water) and wash twice a day.

acnenomoreAcne is surrounded by many myths, the myths of acne should be explained and that they are false.
 
Scientific knowledge about acne allows us to shed light on some of the myths surrounding this condition, but many still remain. Here we list some of the most common myths about acne.

Acne myths -1

Acne is caused by poor hygiene. This belief may have arisen because of the skin infections associated with acne. However, the lack of cleanliness is not the reason for outbreaks of acne. The mixture of sebum and dead cells beneath the skin surface makes it impossible to clean. However, cleaning by washing with mild soap and water twice a day, keep the skin as healthy as possible. Be careful not to scrub too hard, because that could make the acne worse.

Acne is caused by certain foods. There is an old belief that eating chocolate linked to the appearance of acne and pimples. There is no scientific evidence for this relationship – studies have shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between eating chocolate and acne. Within the same acne myth is linked with other foods such as potato chips and sugar. It is true, however, that eating too much of these foods is unhealthy, and you want to stay as healthy as possible and always if you feel even more affected by acne. Limiting the consumption of chocolate and sugar is always a good idea.

Even though chocolate and french fries do not cause acne, some foods seem to aggravate. Thus we could speak of a relationship between milk and acne, and also among the foods high in iodine and the emergence of a greater number of grains. Iodine is found in seafood, so that people with acne are often advised not to eat too much seafood.

Acne is related to sex. On several occasions we have heard that masturbation or celibacy is the cause of the grains. Logically there is no evidence that this is real. There is a connection between the production of the hormone testosterone and sexual activity, however, the relationship between sex (or lack thereof) and the production of sebum (the oily substance which combines with dead skin cells to cause acne) is unclear. The anger and stress produced an increase in the presence of the hormone testosterone.

There are many treatments available to treat acne, so those who suffer from this condition, its effects and discomfort, may find relief by consulting with a dermatologist or using any of the medicines and creams that are sold without prescription. Always follow the instructions on all medications and comply with the information supplied by your doctor.
